WMS Foxbody Coyote Swap

So you want to swap a Coyote into your Fox Mustang. We agree it's one of the best engine setups going and a great option when upgrading your 5.0. Power is better than most stroker small blocks and drivability / reliability are excellent. Naturally aspirated is probably more than enough power for a Fox but if you want excess, add some boost and 700+ hp is easily attainable.

Can a Coyote Swap be done for under 10 grand Canadian? Not running and driving but the majority of the engine can. We dug deep in our parts bin and swap knowledge to put together a engine package that covers most of the important parts needed to get a Coyote up and running in your Fox Mustang. Yes there's more needed but this gives you a pretty good idea what its going to cost to get going.

  • 2015-2015 F150 Coyote engine, under 20,000kms
  • We have a good source to purchase good used low km truck engines. The 2015 - 2017 Gen 2 Coyote is a significant upgrade from the Gen 1 and don't suffer from the valve issues that the 2011-2014 truck engines had. Power in stock form is 385hp but with headers and tuning 425-450 is easily attainable.
  • Holley Terminator X EFI System with wiring harness
  • We have debated the new Holley system vs the Ford Controls Pack but to run a truck engine the Holley is the best choice. First the firing order of the Gen 2 truck engine is different than the Mustang. This requires a tuning change which is easily done in the Holley. The Control Pack would require an SCT and custom tuning that adds considerably to the cost. The Holley comes complete with a engine wiring harness that's easy to wire into the Mustang and is completely tuneable. So future modifications are easily handled.
  • The Holley comes with a LSU 4.9 Wideband sensor for self tuning and is easily monitored / datalogged in the handheld programmer.
  • BBK Coyote Swap headers and X pipe
  • The BBK Coyote swap headers and X pipe are excellent quality and fit nicely. A standard Fox catback bolts up to them and headers are available in optional ceramic coating if desired.
  • QA1 tubular K-member with Coyote mounts
  • QA1's new k-member makes the Coyote swap easy and more affordable. A direct bolt in k-member with engine mount pads for the Coyote. The k-member works with stock control arms and tubular control arms are available as an option. The QA1 is a great street / drag k-member. If you're building your Fox for road course racing then we would recommend the Maximum Motorsports setup.
  • QA1 Coil over kit with springs
  • Coilovers in the front are required as there is no stock spring perch in the tubular k-member. QA1 coil over kit fits stock, Koni, Tokico, Strange and most other shocks. Various spring rates are available to suit your application.
  • Ford Performance Alternator kit with belt
  • The Boss alternator kit is a direct bolt on and supplied with the correct belt.
  • High Torque mini starter
  • A direct bolt on with lots of clearance for the headers.
  • Electric power steering pump
  • The easiest way to keep the power steering in your Fox. The Coyote engines never came with power steering so fitting a belt drive pump can be difficult and expensive. We use the Ford / Volvo power steering pump that is compact and easy to install. Just positive / negative battery and a key on power and it's wired. The pump can be mounted anywhere with just a feed and return line to be connected. We supply the main fitting but you will need to have a AN fitting crimped onto your power steering hose.
  • WMS High Velocity Air intake system
  • This side mount intake uses 4" aluminum tubing and a large S&B cleanable air filter.
  • Ford drive by wire accelerator pedal
  • Plugs into the Holley wiring and controls the drive by wire throttle body. Easy to mount and there are adapter brackets available if you want to bolt right in.
  • Stock style engine mounts
  • Engine mounts bolt to the Coyote and drop right into the k-member, no messing around!

So that covers the main parts needed to get the engine in and up and running. Of course there's more needed before you can take it for a test drive...

  • Radiator and heater hoses: It's easy to modify some hoses to hook up to your radiator and heater core.
  • Electric fan: If you don't have one already you're going to need one. And the Holley Terminator will control it for you
  • Fuel system: If you have a 190 or 255 lph pump already that will handle the fuel flow. Stock lines will work too, you will just need a regulator and bit of line to hook to the engine.
  • Gauges: You can hook up the stock gauges without too much trouble and the Holley has a tach output. Of course lots of aftermarket gauges and Holley has fantastic Digital Dashes that take information right from the Terminator X
  • Oil filter: The Coyote oil filter location causes issues so it's best to use a remote mount for the filter. We have a Canton block adapter that makes fitting easy.
  • Transmission: There are various options to consider. The easiest for a manual would be the T-45 or 3650 from a 96-04 Mustang. These bolt up to the engine and the shifter is in the correct location for a Fox. You can use your T-5 with a Quicktime bellhousing but that depends how good of a T5 you have. The T-56 is a popular choice as well, athough getting up there in cost. You will also need a flywheel and clutch to match the transmission. For an automatic transmission the 4R70W or 6R80 will bolt up but will require electronic control (The Holley Terminator X can run a 4R70W).
  • Driveshaft: This will depend on your transmission choice but generally having your driveshaft shortened is the best strategy.
  • Brakes: The stock booster will not fit with a Coyote. We recommend manual brakes over hydroboost but either will clear.
